The Giant Sequoias are the biggest living things and may live to be over 3000 years old. They grow naturally only within California in the western Sierra Nevada range. Since their discovery (by non-native people) in the mid 1800s, they have been very protected . But amazingly, that protection could spell disaster for them. If the natural fires that would burn throughout the forest every 40 or 50 years are stopped, then young trees cannot begin to grow. Fire burns off the needles and other debris from the forest floor allowing the tiny seeds to reach bare soil where their short roots can germinate and grow. To insure these helpful fires, the National Parks and the forest service start controlled burns in the Sequoia and other forests every so often. I stayed up all night wandering through this fire and taking photos. When the early morning sun came up, its rays filtered through the smoke to allow the photo you see here.
