One  of the most beautiful snakes.   These non-poisonous mimics of the poisonous coral snakes( not in California) kill their prey by constriction.   I was on a hike in the lower end ofYosemite Valley when I came upon this snake in the process of eating a rat. King Snakes are a very valuable resourceful rodent control.  The king snakes have a reputation of finding and eating rattlesnakes.  I have two friends who have seen them attack and kill a rattlesnake.   I'm lucky if I see one of these snakes every few years.
