These deer are California Mule Deer. In Yosemite Valley, they see several thousand people every day and soon learn that we pose no threat to them. Because of this, its often quite easy to get within portrait distance of a mother and her babies. Still, they are wild animals and the mothers have been known to kick or butt tourists who do not respect their space. Photographers are advised to use telephoto lenses so they do not have to approach too close.
